The path of purification of the ego seems obviously to do with forgiveness and, well, purification!

In the light of recent experience I have returned to the more 'zen' chapters of
this book, such as 'Advanced Awareness' and 'Dialogues' seeking to understand what Hawkins means by the path of consciousness with a bit more humility.

All external advice refers to surrender. Give up, turn away, look inwards,
release, let go...

All internal advice refers to abstract-sounding things, the 'spiritual will',
inspiring the 'will'. Hawkins refers to how worship is an entreaty for the Higher Power to support one's spiritual endeavour, which makes sense: the purification activities become inspirational and impersonal ways to higher states for this path of consciousness. He refers to various externals such as incense or music having beauty "which is like perfection" and therefore
inspirational quality.

But the main (perhaps the only thing) is this intentional turning away of
awareness, constantly and unyieldingly, inspired by the spiritual will to something invisible to the rest of humanity. Hawkins says:

"The search is progressively within to discover the source of the knowingness of the sense of 'I'"

And:

"In the process of spiritual discovery, one looks instead to discover what it is
that is aware of and has to authority to sense the existence of 'I-ness' or the quality of 'I-ness'."

It seems the aspect of 'I' which is aware of existence and itself can only be so
because God supports this impersonal aspect of awareness. So worship is the way to request the support of these aspects of awareness, and then they become progressively self-fulfilling and more recognised. To the ego worship is absurd, or an attempt to 'please' or 'appease' a vengeful God.

But the obvious response to not feeling the Presence would be to inwardly engage in worship of the Divine in one's everyday existence, intentionally making each act an expression of appreciation and gratitude to the Divine.

The advanced awareness Hawkins talks of reveals itself when such an attitude of worship, praise, appreciation, and gratitude to the Divine is present, because advanced awareness only comes about "as a consequence of the greater Awareness".

Blessings,

PB.
